Climate Smart Agriculture Project Proposal Development & Management Training
The professional short course on Climate-smart agriculture (CSA) is an integrated approach to managing landscapes; cropland, livestock, forests and fisheries that addresses the interlinked challenges of food security and accelerating climate change.
A growing global population and changing diets are driving up the demand for food. The challenge is intensified by agriculture’s extreme vulnerability to climate change. Climate change’s negative impacts are already being felt, in the form of increasing temperatures, weather variability, shifting agroecosystem boundaries, invasive crops and pests, and more frequent extreme weather events. On farms, climate change is reducing crop yields, the nutritional quality of major cereals, and lowering livestock productivity. Substantial investments and skill in adaptation will be required to maintain current yields and to achieve production and food quality increases to meet demand. This hands-on training will endeavor to impart the above skills.
The training is also expected to help participants develop a practical project idea and write comprehensive project fundraising proposal. It will also equip participants to come up with possible project funding sources, liaise with stakeholders in project idea initiation and develop fundraising initiatives.
Expected Training Outcomes,
By the end of the training participants will be able to;
- Help the trainees appreciate the reality of climate change and variability
- Describe the principles of climate smart agriculture, in particular the three pillars of mitigation, adaptation and productivity
- Provide the trainees with relevant knowledge on the application of CSA technologies, innovations and management practices to mitigate climate change risks
- Provide the trainees with relevant attitude, knowledge and skills for implementing CSA technologies, innovations and management practices
- Investigate the interactions between climate change and agriculture, including basic facts about the effects of climate change and the most important greenhouse gases
- Reflect on how consumer behavior, policies and regulations, and financial aspects influence the adoption of climate smart and other sustainable practices
- Acquire skills in project design, formulation of project concept notes and comprehensive fundraising proposals

Way forward After the Training
Participants will develop a work plan through the help of facilitators that stipulates application of skills acquired in improving their organizations. Beyond that through the skills acquired the staff will be able to timely facilitate and improve the supervision of the development of CSA programs and other projects. ASPM will help monitor implementation progress after the training.
