Forest, Landscape Restoration, Management & Forest Governance Course.

June 3 @ 8:00 am - June 14 @ 5:00 pm EAT

Forest, Landscape Management & Forest Governance and Application of GIS Training.

Governance remains one of the critical challenges for sustainable forest management across Africa.
Despite several attempts by governments to sustainably manage the forests, the forest covers has
drastically reduced in the last decade. Forests by their nature are long-term enterprises, and the forest
owner’s expects outcomes, like the forest conditions many years into the future, require actions today
and over time to ensure these outcomes occur.
Learning Outcomes
The overall objective of this training is to promote understanding on the relationship between forest,
landscape management and governance as strategy for achieving the objectives of the forest sector.
The training will also major on the application of GIS and remote sensing in better management of the
sector.
At the end of the course delegate should be able to:
• Have a better understanding of the drivers of forest degradation and forest loss in the country.
• Move beyond explaining forest degradation from a viewpoint of scientific or technical
narratives as the obvious explanations for failure in ensuring sustainable forest management
in the country.
• Better understand the power relations among the forest sector actors and how such power
relations influence, shape or sometimes disrupt decision-making and action in the sector.
• Act more purposeful in developing policy-influencing advocacy actions and strategies to
address governance deficiencies in the forest sub- sector.
• Describe the role of natural disturbance (fire, insects, disease etc.) in shaping boreal forests
• Describe forest management policy and legislation
• Describe what is meant by ecosystem-based approach to managing for biological diversity and
other non-timber values.
• Describe the various silvicultural systems, reforestation, and stand tending practices used in
operational forestry and evaluate their appropriateness for boreal forests and for different
objectives.
• Have hands on skills on GIS and remote sensing
